Significance: Garden City Lumbermill Town was an early planned community. Planned and built by Albert Hanson. The Cypress Lumbermill operations was originally moved from Franklin, Louisiana to the Garden City location on Bayou Teche. Across the public road (LA 182) was the company town of Garden City, consisting of: an administration office building (1900), Greek Revival, two story, wood frame, front & rear, two story porches with tin, hipped roof, restored into private residence (1990). Commissary (1933), Stroud & Stroud, general merchandise store, gable end, wood frame structure, one story, tin roof. A school, post office, blacksmith shop, a church and mill worker's houses. These houses are divided into seven house form types: Types 'A' & 'B' (1880-1910) There were originally three large, Victorian, two-story, wood framed structures, (one remains) facing the mill on 'The Loop,' the connecting street with the main elements of the community-the worker's housing. Type 'C' & 'D' (1880-1910) The prototype houseform, approx. 50+ houses, wood framed, two story, simple four room, plus-one story kitchen at rear. Type 'E' & 'F' (1920-30) Smaller one story 'shot gun' type, moved-in to replace earlier two story (Type 'C' & 'D') prototype houses. Type 'G' (1920) Simple, one story, wood frame, bungalow type.
