Atlantic Ocean (Oct. 18, 2004) Airman Anthony Hensen, left, and Airman Russell Clark, pull the emergency-landing barricade tight in preparation to raise it up, during a drill on the flight deck aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75). In emergency situations, the barricade is stretched across the carrier deck to stop the aircraft and to ensure the safety of the pilot and the aircraft carrier crew. The Truman Carrier Strike Group (CSG) is on regularly scheduled deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism and is currently conducting carrier qualifications off the East coast of the United States. In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
