ow of blood to the lower divisions ofthe spinal cord and the genitalia, theparts should be briskly rubbed afterthey are dry with a moderately coarsetowel or with a flesh-brush. Cold may be applied directly to theprostatic portion of the urethra bymeans of the cooling sound or psy-chrophor of Winternitz,1 representedin Fig. 13, which is nothing more thana double-current eyeless catheterclosed at its beak. To the proximalextremities of this rubber tubes areattached, through one of which thefluid flows into, and through the otherout of, the instrument. The former, provided with a stopcock, is connectedwith a rubber bag suspended a fewfeet above the patient, while the latteris received in an empty vessel placedat the patients feet. At the outset, thewinternitzs psychrophor. temperature should be about 5;0 F.,and be gradually reduced to 520 F.,and the sittings be lengthened from five to ten minutes. The device has been found to be the most beneficial whenthe ejaculations are too precipitate.

Not only are the electro t<effects of the constant current valuable in increasing thecitability of the genito-spinal centre, but galvanization is tarmore serviceable in restoring the tonicity of the arterioles oithe erectile tissues of the penis, and in increasing the amountof blood flowing in them, than are the measures to which Ihave just alluded. Although the dose of the current cannotbe accurately prescribed by the number of elements of thebattery, the quantity generated by from fifteen to twentycells will, as a rule, be found to answer the purpose. Theanode, or positive electrode, which should be of large size,is placed over the lumbar spine, and the cathode carriedover the gland and back of the penis, the cords, testes, andperineum. The sittings at first should be limited to two orthree minutes every forty-eight ho
