description

Summary

A courtesan seated on a curiously shaped wooden seat placed against a wall at right angles to the door of a house. She sits directed to the left, her legs crossed, one hand raised as if beckoning. She is similar in dress and appearance to BMSat 5823. The seat is ornamented with a satyr's mask and a carved vine-branch with clusters of grapes. Beneath the title is engraved, "For she sitteth at the door of her house on a seat, in the high places of the city: To call passengers who go right on their ways. Proverbs, Ch. IX. vers 14 & 15." 2 September 1780
