Summary
On Feb. 1, 2014, 4th Marine Regiment celebrated the 70th anniversary of the 1944 Reconstitution and the 2013 full Resumption of the Unit Deployment Program. On Feb. 1, 1944, the Commandant, General Vandergrift, ordered that the 1st Raider Regiment fold their colors and become the 4th Marine Regiment. From that date, 4th Marine Regiment fought gallantly at Guam, Okinawa, and eventually Vietnam. Over the past 70 years, the Regiment has served in many climes and places across the Pacific and remains the only forward deployed Infantry regiment. Over the past decade, in support of the War on Terror, the UDP program stopped and 4th Marines has deployed as a unit and as individuals to support operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2012, by direction of the Commandant, the UDP resumed, and in October 2013, the final infantry battalion arrived. Today, there are three infantry battalions from across the Marine Corps that constitute 4th Marine Regiment; 1st Bn, 8th Marine Regiment from Camp Lejeune, 3rd Bn, 1st Marine Regiment from Camp Pendleton, and 2nd Bn, 3rd Marine Regiment from Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.
