public

Location and History

Baikonur Cosmodrome is a spaceport located in southern Kazakhstan, near the city of Baikonur. It was built by the Soviet Union in the 1950s and is the oldest and largest operational space launch facility in the world. The cosmodrome covers an area of 6,717 square kilometers (2,593 square miles) and has been the launch site for numerous historic missions, including the first artificial satellite (Sputnik 1) in 1957 and the first human in space (Yuri Gagarin) in 1961.

Current Use

Today, Baikonur Cosmodrome is leased by Russia from Kazakhstan and remains an active launch site for both Russian and international space missions. It is used to launch Soyuz spacecraft, Progress cargo spacecraft, and other Russian rockets. The cosmodrome also serves as a training facility for Russian cosmonauts.

Facilities

Baikonur Cosmodrome has a wide range of facilities, including launch pads, assembly buildings, mission control centers, and a cosmonaut training center. The most famous launch pad is Site 1, also known as the Gagarin's Start, from which Yuri Gagarin was launched into space.

Significance

Baikonur Cosmodrome is a significant historical and scientific site. It played a crucial role in the early days of the space race and continues to be an important launch facility for space exploration. The cosmodrome is also a symbol of international cooperation in space, as it is used by both Russia and other countries.

Tourism

Baikonur Cosmodrome is open to visitors, and there are a number of tours available. Visitors can see the launch pads, the assembly buildings, and the cosmonaut training center. They can also learn about the history of the cosmodrome and the space program.
