Im 17. Jahrhundert spezialisierten sich die Maler auf bestimmte Gattungen. Willem van de Velde beispielsweise wurde zum Marinemaler, vielleicht sogar zum erfolgreichsten überhaupt. Er porträtierte große, spektakuläre Seeschlachten ebenso wie kleine, ruhige Küstenansichten, wie wir sie hier sehen. Auf der glatten Wasseroberfläche liegen noch bescheidene Handelsschiffe. Etwas weiter hinten in der Mitte warten zwei Kriegsschiffe gelassen auf das, was kommt.
