o ON 75 JOHN HENRY ROOSDutch School f 1631-1665 rri Roos spent the greater portion of his life in Germany. Hewas accounted one of the most celebrated animal-painters of histime. He designed everything after nature, and frequently placedhis animals in attitudes the most singular and difficult to be repre-sented. His landscape is pleasingly diversified with pleasant fields,woodlands and shepherds cots, or ruins more picturesque, alwaysadapted to the subject represented. His coloring is fresh andvigorous, his pencil firm and decided. IDEAL LANDSCAPE IN ITALY A scene of bucolic repose in which landscape, cattle andhuman beings share that complete restfulness which is so delight-ful in the country and when transferred to canvas brings its mes-sage of peace into the turmoil of city.
