Western Europe, from the Cantabriansto northern Norway, is in the track of the prevailingwesterlies at all seasons, and therefore has rain at allseasons. The Mediterranean region has rain in winter,foi only at that season is it in the belt of the prevailingwesterlies. Natural Vegetation. In Europe, more than in any other continent, thenatural vegetation has been altered by man, so thatover large areas the type of natural vegetation shown onFig. 51 now only exists in samples. For instance, vastareas of forests have been removed from western andcentral Europe, and extensive tracts of Hungarian andRussian grassland have long since been ploughed, andin modern times produce rich harvests of cultivatedgrasses, e.g. wheat, etc. Ttindra.—Vegetation of this type is found in theextreme north, where the winters are long and severe,the summers short and warm, and the total precipitationis less than ten inches per annum.
