cauteryand light battery, the plates of each cell being severallyconnected to alternately opposite brass pieces ; when lightis required, the hinged rod is used and the cells are con-nected in series ; in the case of the cautery, the sliding-rodcan be pushed in any desired distance until the platinumbe hot enough. This obviates the necessity of a rheostat.The zincs that are used in bichromate of potash, Bunsenand Daniell cells, require frequent amalgamation ; this isdone by first cleaning the zinc, then by dipping it into asolution of sulphuric acid (i to 10), and then by runningmercury over it and rubbing it in with a piece of flannel ora tooth-brush until the whole surface is quite bright. Thezinc should not hiss when replaced in the acid. If thesalt creeps over the sides of the Leclanche cells, the wholecell should be taken apart, the glass vessel washed, the Accessories 107 margins paraffined or vaselined, and the solution ofammonium chloride diluted. If the battery seem after a time to fail, andno faults can be found in the electrodes, rheophores, orconnections, careful search must be made for the offendingcell. If the battery be provided with a double dial collectorthis will be easy. With a galvanometer and a moderateresistance in circuit, bring each cell successively and indi-vidually into circuit, and pick out the one that fails incausing a sufficient galvanometric deflection ; examine andmake good any faulty connection with it, and if none canbe found, unscrew the connections, and take the cell outand clean it, reamalgamating and replacing the zinc, andrefilling the cell with fresh ammonium chloride solution.
