"He sent redemption unto His people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever. Holy and reverend is his name." Psalm 111:9.
"Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching." 1 Timothy 5:17
"Not just anyone can be a minister of the Word. There are special callings involved. He must be called by God to the office, and that has to be shown in several ways; he must be carefully examined; he must be qualified and gifted; he must be able to demonstrate the call... But he does not represent himself or his own views... When he fills the office he represents God in the midst of the people, ministering God's Word and mercy to the people. It is not merely the minister that is received, but God who is received through his ministry. In other words, when we look at him we should be looking for God's own ministry of His Word and mercy to us. It is not the minister who is revered, but God. That is why ministers have been called "reverend" in our churches." John Vandervliet, member of Canadian Reformed Church, Ontario, Canada, 07-18-2007, 07:17 PM
