The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company was a British opera company founded in 1875 by Richard D'Oyly Carte. The company was known for its performances of the comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan, including such famous works as The Pirates of Penzance, H.M.S. Pinafore and The Mikado.

D'Oyly Carte was a shrewd businessman who recognised the potential of Gilbert and Sullivan's work and worked closely with them to produce and promote their operas. The company became renowned for its high quality productions featuring talented singers, musicians and actors.

Over the years, the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company became a cultural institution in Britain and its performances were eagerly anticipated by audiences across the country. Despite financial difficulties at times, the company continued to produce Gilbert and Sullivan operas until it finally closed its doors in 1982.

Today, the legacy of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company lives on through recordings, revivals and adaptations of the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, which continue to be loved by audiences around the world.
